Wünderbike is a community bike sharing program that was started by volunteers from the Mechanical Tempest in conjunction with the Aro Valley Community Centre.

Wünderbike is a free bike-sharing program for Wellingtonians and visitors.

Borrow a wünderbike to speed up errands, take a leisurely ride along the harbour or go for a weekend bike trip.

To promote bike safety we provide riders with a helmet, lights and a bike lock.

We have a fleet of 5 snazzy and multi-coloured bikes in a range of styles and sizes from mountain bikes to single speed beach cruisers. Many of them have rear racks and all have kicks stands and bells for safe and easy riding.

Become a Wünderbike member by filling out a form at the Aro Valley Community Centre , The Mechanical Tempest or online from our membership page. (You must bring photo ID when you rent your first bike.)
Members can rent bikes for up to one week.
Wellington Timebank members are welcome to make use of this program!

Bike pick-up hours: Monday-Friday
Aro Valley Community Centre (48 Aro Street)
The Mechanical Tempest (128 Abel Smith Street)

Return your bike anytime by locking it outside the Aro Valley Community Centre. Take at look at our Better Biking page to learn how to correctly lock a wünderbike.

Volunteer mechanics from The Mechanical Tempest, Wellington's community bike workshop at 128 Abel Smith Street, check and repair the bikes regularly. We also rely on feedback from wünderbike users so if you have a problem with a bicycle or a suggestion for improvement don't hesitate to contact us!
Wellington Wünderbike is made up of a group of volunteers who work collectively to make cycling in Wellington safer and more accessible to everyone by offering this free service to the community.

We depend on koha and your contributions to keep this program running. If you are interested in donating a bike, helmet, tools, supplies or money to the project please contact us at wellingtonwunderbike@gmail.com

We would love to have more volunteers to help expand this program, maintain the bikes and boost cycling in Wellington.  Contact us to become a part of Wellington Wünderbike.

  1. Hi there! Last Saturday I had a chance to explore Wellington's beautiful South coast for my first time. It would not have been possible without the mountain bike which Wunderbike kindly rented me. Thanks again for all the friends who made this one of my favorite ride possible. Hope you guys have a wonderful weekend as well;))

  2. Fantastic project. Borrowed 2 bikes for a few days and they were perfect for exploring Welli with, especially around the bays... thanks to everyone who supports this project.
